Encrypting Files
Use the Encrypt screen to turn any file into an encrypted .scv file. You can save it locally, back it up to the cloud, or do both.
Step 1 - Pick a file
Click Pick File to open your system file picker. Select any file - SecureCrypt encrypts any file type. The selected filename, size, and path are shown so you can confirm your selection before proceeding. Click the file name to deselect and choose again.
Step 2 - Set options
Upload to cloud
When this toggle is on (the default), the encrypted file is uploaded to your secure personal cloud storage after encryption. Cloud upload is required if you want to:
- Access the file from another device.
- Share the file with another SecureCrypt user.
Turn the toggle off if you only want a local encrypted copy and do not need cloud backup or sharing.
Save to custom location
By default, encrypted files are saved to your app data folder. Enable this toggle to choose a different folder. Files saved to a custom location are preserved when you log out; files in the default location are deleted on logout.
Step 3 - Encrypt
Click Encrypt. The app compresses the file, encrypts it with AES-256-GCM using a randomly generated password, wraps it in a .scv file, saves it locally, and uploads it to the cloud if that option is on.
Step 4 - Copy the password
When encryption is complete, the app shows:
- The original and encrypted filenames.
- The save location.
- The decryption password - a random password generated for this file.
- The file ID - a unique identifier you can use for tracking.
Click Copy Password to copy the decryption password to your clipboard. SecureCrypt stores this password in your vault automatically - you do not need to save it separately to decrypt your own files later. However, if you intend to share the file outside of SecureCrypt, you will need to send the recipient this password.
Decrypting a file
Go to the Decrypt screen to decrypt any .scv file - either from your vault or from a file you received. See the Managing Files page for how to access and preview files you have already encrypted.
