Sharing Files

The Share screen lets you share any uploaded file with another SecureCrypt user. The recipient gets their own encrypted copy of the file key - only they can decrypt it. You can revoke access at any time.

How sharing works

When you share a file, SecureCrypt encrypts that file's decryption password using the recipient's public key and records the share on the blockchain. The recipient's app uses their private key to retrieve the password and decrypt the file. At no point does the password travel unencrypted.

Because the share is on-chain, it is permanent and auditable - both you and the recipient can see it in the Audit Trail.

Sharing a file

Step 1 - Select a file

Only files that have been uploaded to the cloud can be shared. Choose a file from the dropdown list. If a file does not appear, go to the Files screen and upload it first.

Step 2 - Enter recipient email

Type the recipient's email address. The app checks the blockchain to confirm they have a SecureCrypt account. A green checkmark appears when the recipient is verified. If the address is not registered, you will see an error and sharing is blocked.

Step 3 - Set an expiry (optional)

By default, shares do not expire. To limit access to a specific period, click Set Expiry Date & Time and choose a date and time. After that moment, the share is marked expired and the recipient will no longer be able to download the file.

Note on expiry If the recipient has already downloaded and decrypted the file, expiry does not remove that copy from their device. Expiry only prevents future downloads.

Step 4 - Share

Click Share File. The app records the share on the blockchain. This is irreversible in the sense that the blockchain entry remains, but you can revoke the share at any time to cut off access.

Free plan share limit

Free accounts can have up to 2 active shares at any time. A share counts as active if it has not been revoked and has not expired.

If you reach the limit, a prompt will appear when you try to share another file. To free up a slot:

Tip: use expiry dates Setting an expiry date on shares you only need temporarily means slots recycle automatically without any manual action on your part.

Managing your shared files

The My Shared Files tab lists every file you have shared, with the recipient, share date, expiry, and current status (Active, Expired, or Revoked).

Revoking a share

Click Revoke on any active share. After confirming, the app records a revocation on the blockchain. The recipient can no longer download or decrypt the file. The share status changes to Revoked immediately.

Inbox - files shared with you

The Inbox screen lists all files that other users have shared with you. Only active shares are shown - revoked and expired shares are filtered out automatically.

Downloading a shared file

Click a share to open its detail panel. You have two options:

You can also click Copy Decryption Password to retrieve and copy the file password to your clipboard for manual use.

End-to-end encrypted The file lives in the owner's cloud storage. Only you can decrypt the password (using your private key), and only you can therefore open the file.
